How to get that fun travel feel at home

How to get that fun travel feel at home

Doing fun stuff together that relates to travel is the next best thing to the real thing.

We all would like to go off on some great adventure. For a long time.

But for most, it’s just not possible outside of school vacations. Of course, schooling on the road is an option if going off for months or on a round the world trip.

There are wonderful families who have some great success stories doing this.

But I’d like to focus on those who are part of a majority:  families who have work hours and school obligations.

So what can you do to get that “travel” feel in everyday Life?

.
Here are 5 suggestions to get started without having to pack a suitcase!

.

1. Cook up a great meal.

.

This is a great activity as everyone can participate and the results are usually delicious!

Have some travel talk around meal time, maybe each person can name a few countries on their wish list or how they imagine a certain place they’ve never been before.

Here are a few simple recipes to try out such as Chicken Curry from Asia or a platter of Spring Rolls.

Try a Brazilian desert or some Tapas from Barcelona.

And on a lazy Sunday make a healthy Ratatouille from the south of France.

The possibilities of cooking together are endless, but these recipes are a good start 🙂

2. Read

.

Now not everyone likes to read and for those who do,  the same little jingle keeps coming back.. no time, too much to do!

Yes, I hear it too.

But.. reading is an amazing way to travel without leaving the coziness of your living room.

Set aside a small amount of time each evening, see what fits your schedule best. Maybe before or after dinner and have everyone take turns reading a page or chapter out loud.

By reading together for maybe 20 minutes there will still be plenty of time to get things done and it makes for a great quality time moment to look forward to.

Try reading a few pages of the book suggestions below.

  • Life of Pi by Yann Martel
    .
  • City of Djinns: A Year in Delhi
    .
  • The Great Railway Bazaar: By Train Through Asia by Paul Theroux
  • The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
    .
  • Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes
    .
  • Arabian Sands – Wilfred Thesiger

3. Play

.

We love to play board games or any other type of game that gets everyone involved.
Some games don’t take up a lot of time.

Try a board game that talks about different countries and cultures or even a puzzle that makes learning fun!

Our favorites are puzzles. City puzzles or world puzzles. They don’t have to be done in one sitting (almost impossible). But if you have a small table or extra floor space then get together about 15 minutes daily and go crazy together 🙂

4. Walking Tour

No one knows your own hometown like you right?

But you’d be surprised!

Take a walking tour if there is one available or just plan the walk yourself to places you don’t know yet.

There are always neighborhoods, museums, coffee shops or different corners in your city that you haven’t explored yet.

Prepare your camera!

Another option is to take your bicycle and explore further than your neighborhood.

During the weekend make an afternoon or a day out of it with a delicious picnic.

Make sure to go to places in your area that you’ve never been to and be a tourist in your own hometown!

5. Sing and Dance

.

Choose a country you’d like to visit one day.

Let’s take Brazil as an example. Get everyone in the living room and put on some samba music!

I guess you’ve figured out what to do next 🙂 Danse! And get transported to another country.

If you prefer Africa or America or Europe or Timbuktu or ?  Just go for it.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t know how – what matters here is that you enjoy the time spent together and just have some good fun.

If you choose a country that speaks your language then, by all means, start singing!

Use your imagination, move around, slow or fast, get your vocal chords ringing and just have a great time!
